This video is just a little extra tool for you to use whenever you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious.
I really like breathing exercises because most of the time we can do them anywhere we are without anyone knowing what we are doing. Today’s tool is another relaxation breathing exercise. Now there have been a lot of studies that show we should breathe out for twice as long as we breathe in for in order to relax our bodies and expel all of the old air that we hold in during our day. I believe that it is because of this ratio that this 4-7-8 breathing exercise was created.
The first thing I want you to do is sit down (if you can) and even close your eyes (again, if you are able). Breathe in for 4 seconds. Now hold that full breath in for 7 seconds, and then exhale for 8 seconds. Try to focus on your counting, make sure you are doing it slowly. Think of elementary school when you were told to count one Mississippi, two Mississippi… etc. Do this round of 4-7-8 three or four times. See how you feel. You cannot do this one too often or for too long, so if that is not enough, do some more. This can really help you go to sleep or deal with a very stressful event or situation. Even if you cannot sit down or close your eyes you can definitely breathe and count, so use this tool!! I hope you find it helpful! And let’s keep working together, and supporting one another as we work towards a Healthy Mind, and a Healthy Body.
I just had to thank you for this video...I find this tip to be very helpful! I used it at a barbeque/party I went to last night (I'm terrified of parties so I was quite anxious) and it really helped me calm my nerves. I actually was actually able to manage my anxiety all of the way through the meal with my friends. I can't remember the last time I made it through a party or large social gathering without leaving due to anxiety, so thank you. I actually had fun :)
That is so great to hear!!!! Hooray!!! I am so proud of you for trying it and using it when you needed it most:) Keep up the good work honey!!! <3
