Can I help someone in crisis when I myself am struggling?
I get questions about this all the time. Some want to know how to help someone with a mental health struggle when they themselves are struggling, others want to know how to support a sibling going through the same thing. The truth is that we cannot help someone else when we are struggling too. I know that’s hard to hear, but it’s the truth. If we are not doing well we don’t have any extra energy to give out to someone else. What we can do is check in, let them know we are thinking of them, and that we will reach back out when we are doing better. Just like the safety instructions on a plane, we have to put on our own mask before helping someone else with theirs.
Try to remember this message when you find yourself being pulled in a ton of different directions are you are having a hard time. It’s okay to take care of yourself first. Then, and only then, can we help someone else. xox
